Boxing betting sites list Spence as the betting favorite in the main event fight. But, will he actually win the welterweight battle? Let’s examine these boxing odds further, look for any betting value, and KO our picks.

Jean Pierre Augustin (17-0-1) vs Chris Arreola (37-5-1)

  • Jean Pierre Augustin (+270)
  • Chris Arreola (-360)

Arreola is a name that we all recognize from his past success in the heavyweight division. He’s the betting favorite for this match, but the smallest favorite of the PPV card. Furthermore, he’s going up against a fighter who has yet to face someone of this caliber. So, we have a bit of an unknown commodity in Augustin. Neither fighter instills betting confidence, but this fight will be a good test for both of them.

Jean Pierre Augustin (JPA) comes into this fight undefeated, but is facing the toughest foe of his career. Fortunately, it’s not Arreola in his prime, but one who just came out of a 2 ½ year retirement this past December. JPA is looking at this fight as his coming out party. It’s an opportunity for Augustin to make a name for himself at the expense of the veteran Arreola:

“Chris is an established name, he’s a veteran who has seen it all pretty much and this is a big step-up for me of course. But those people who are saying he will beat me, of course they’re saying that. Chris is the name and they all know him and no-one knows me, I’m an unknown. But this is my time now, Chris has had his time. It’s a changing of the guard, that’s what I’m looking at. People are in for a big surprise in this fight, a very big surprise.”

For Arreola, he views this fight as an opportunity to add to his legacy. Chris returned from retirement to pursue a world title and leave something behind other than collecting paychecks:

“Right now, my career is all about putting in the work and my legacy. I’m not in this anymore for money. I love money, but I’m comfortable. I’m here for legacy. I want to leave something behind… I’m chasing a title I feel mentally sharper now. Mentally I’m just relaxed in the ring. Some people are amped the whole round. But no, I know how to relax and work the ring and work my fight.”

Who Takes the Next Step in the Heavyweight Division?

JPA took off all of 2018 in order to finish filming a role in a movie and to find a new promotional deal. He ended up signing with PBC and this is the first fight under his new deal. Not only does JPA want to continue his acting career, but he also wants to move on to bigger fights in the division. JPA believes that he will win this weekend and use the victory as a stepping stone to move on to another notable fight.

Arreola came out of retirement after a shaky few years that led to his retirement. Chris went 2-3-1, 1 ND in his last 7 fights before deciding to retire. He’s faced some of the sport’s top fighters dating all the way back to Vitali Klitschko in 2009. More recently, he lost to Wilder in his last fight before retirement.

Last December, Arreola defeated a fighter who was 20-10-4. Arreola isn’t going to have that kind of advantage in this contest. JPA is a better fighter and more mobile than some of the lumbering heavyweights out there.

Odds

This fight will make or break JPA’s success in the heavyweight division moving forward. If he loses then he drops back down into the abyss of irrelevancy. However, if he wins then he gets an even bigger fight next time. For Arreola, if he loses then he could go back into retirement. But, if he wins, then he continues marching on toward another title fight.

I wasn’t impressed with that I saw in Arreola’s last fight. Not that JPA has been blowing us away with exciting wins, but at least he appears in better fighting shape that Arreola. I’m going with the upset here. I’m just not convinced with Arreola and I think JPA gets the biggest win of his career.

McJoe Arroyo (18-2) vs Luis Nery (28-0)

  • McJoe Arroyo (+1250)
  • Luis Nery (-2000)

Luis Nery comes into this bout as the biggest betting favorite of the PPV. He’s also the second biggest betting favorite on the night. Nery is a highly talented bantamweight with gold in his future. He will be taking on McJoe Arroyo who comes in as the second biggest underdog on the night. Nery doesn’t offer any betting value and Arroyo isn’t worth a flyer because he has no chance at winning.

Arroyo comes into this fight having lost two of his last three contests. He’s only fought once per year since 2014 and it’s unclear if he’s really ready to face someone of Nery’s caliber. McJoe was a former junior bantamweight champ, but lost that belt in his first title defense. A win this weekend could boost Arroyo’s standing in the division and set him up for a bigger payday next time out.

Nery is also a former champ, but he didn’t lose his title. Luis was stripped of his belt on the eve of this fight against Shinsuke Yamanaka. He’s had issues with weight and also failed a drug test after his first fight against Yamanaka.

Nevertheless, PBC recently signed Nery and believes he has the potential to become the best bantamweight in the world. At only 24 years old, Nery has room for growth and hasn’t even hit his peak yet.

Can Pantera Remain Undefeated?

Nery is the better fighter between these two boxers, but Arroyo is a step up in competition for Nery over his last 9 or 10 fights. So, I don’t expect Nery to walk right through Arroyo. With that said, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Arroyo wins. He’s just not as talented as Nery is.

For this bet, the smart money is on Nery. The only question is whether or not Nery can get another KO on his resume. I’m taking Nery to win via late round TKO. With an impressive win, I can see Nery getting a title shot in his next fight.

J’Leon Love (24-2-1) vs David Benavidez (20-0)

  • J’Leon Love (+850)
  • David Benavidez (-1300)

The undefeated former champ, David Benavidez returns to action after a 13 month hiatus due to a failed drug test last summer. Despite the layoff, the young Benavidez is still the better fighter between these two and the clear favorite. Love is a tough veteran, but he’s not as skilled as Benavidez. Neither fighter offers any betting value.

Love had a 7 fight unbeaten streak (6-0-1) snapped in his last bout against Peter Quillin in August 2018. Love lost via UD to a tough opponent. However, prior to the fight, some pundits felt that Love had the chance at winning. Love’s promoter, Leonard Ellerbe, recently stated that J’Leon had a lot going on in his personal life, which might have been a distraction:

“Not to make any excuses, he had a lot going on in his life, a lot on his mind. And a lot of times what happens is, when a fighter is not focused, they come into a fight and they’re not fully prepared. But again not taking anything from Peter Quillin, outstanding fighter, but that was then.”

David Benavidez was the youngest fighter to win a super middleweight title. He did that by defeating Ronald Gavril via Split Decision in September 2017. The two men decided on a rematch and this time Benavidez won via UD in February 2018. Unfortunately, David hasn’t fought since the Gavril rematch and was eventually stripped of the title due to a drug test showing cocaine in his system.

Since then, Benavidez took time off to get his personal life back in order and is now focused on Love and the goal to recapture the WBC title he lost:

“I’m already first in line to fight for the WBC title, but I have to take care of my job in J’Leon Love and then I get Anthony Dirrell next. J’Leon is a good boxer, he’s a counterpuncher and he’s been in the game for a long time. I’ll be ready for anything. I have studied him a lot. I have been working with boxers, brawlers, the whole nine yards. We’re ready for anything he presents.”

Can Benavidez Return to His Winning Ways?

From April 2015 to September 2017, Benavidez won 11 straight fights. 9 of those wins came via TKO/KO with the two matches against Gavril ending in Decisions.

J’Leon has been stopped one time in his career and it was against Rogelio Medina. Benavidez fought Medina almost 3 years after Love did, and David won via TKO in the 8th round.

Love is going to be a tough challenge for Benavidez because he’s a veteran that was once a promising prospect. Unfortunately, Love is going up against a younger fighter who is taller, has a longer reach, and is more talented overall.

Benavidez will have to come out flat and as a shell of his former self for Love to win this fight. And, I just don’t see that happening. Benavidez stated that he’s already been in camp for 3 months preparing for this fight and he intends on dedicating his outing to his family who’s supported him through a rocky 2018. At just 22, Benavidez has a high ceiling that could see him recapture the WBC title and work his way toward unification bouts within the division.

For that to happen, he has to defeat Love without any doubt. Benavidez believes he can go out there and get the KO. I’m not sure he will get that knockout, but I do see him winning this fight. It will be interesting to see if the time off left him with any ring rust.

Mikey Garcia (39-0, 30 KOs) vs Errol Spence Jr (24-0, 21 KOs)

  • Mikey Garcia (+320)
  • Errol Spence Jr (-390)

Spence is the betting favorite largely due to Garcia having to come up two weight divisions from his last fight. Even with that said, Spence is still an extremely talented fighter with a lot of punching power. Garcia is also a very talented fighter who’s looking to make history. I think he offers betting value as he’s a master technician in the ring. His betting odds are too high. These boxing odds should be closer because both fighters are undefeated champions.

Mikey Garcia is on the verge of doing something that only two other fighters have ever done, that’s move up from featherweight to welterweight and win titles along the way. Only Henry Armstrong and Manny Pacquiao have accomplished this feat. Garcia has won world titles at 126, 130, 135 and 140. He’s now looking at 147 for his next title.

For Garcia, his quest at boxing immortality has brought him to the doorsteps of what could be his first career loss. With that said, Garcia was willing to take the risk in order to cement his name in the annals of this sport:

“There’s a lot at stake. I’m trying to accomplish a big task, overcoming the size, jumping weight classes like I have been. Those are big challenges. My training had to change. But if I can accomplish this, I think I will be forever remembered for this reason. Some of the greatest to ever do it have taken on big tasks, big challenges, and that’s the kind of task that I’m taking right now. Winning this fight will forever cement my name as a fighter who was willing to do this. In the moment, there’s no one else really doing this. I’m willing to do all that it takes to win this fight.”

Earl Spencer Jr Vs Mikey Garcia Odds

For Spence, even though his opponent is coming up in weight, a win over Garcia would punctuate his already brilliant career. Spence went over to the UK and defeated the previous IBF champ Kell Brook. He then followed up that title win by dominating a former champ in Lamont Peterson. At the beginning of the 8th round, Peterson’s corner stopped the fight. In his last fight, Spence KO’d his mandatory challenger Carlos Ocampo in the 1st round.

Earl Spencer Jr Last Fight

Spence isn’t overlooking Garcia despite being the bigger fighter according to their physical size. In fact, Errol is treating this like it’s the biggest fight of his life:

“Fighting at AT&T Stadium in my hometown is a dream come true. If I beat Mikey Garcia the way I plan on beating him, I will be the guy in the sport. This is my year and Mikey isn’t going to stop me. I am training like this is the biggest fight of my life and I want to put on a great show for the fans and win convincingly.”

Who Will Cement Their Legacy?

In boxing, it’s not often that we get a fight where two boxers are undefeated champs looking to improve their legacy. If anything, we often see fighters padding their stats and wallets over putting on fantastic matches for the sport and the fans. That’s what makes this fight between Spence and Garcia so exciting.

We’re watching history in the making. If Spence wins then he can go on to command the big welterweight fights and hopefully unify some belts. If Garcia wins, he becomes a legend of the sport, a cult hero, and someone who can fight for titles in numerous weight classes. That means he can continue to pick the biggest fights available in order to further cement his legacy in boxing history.

As much as I would love to see history being made, it’s hard to envision Garcia winning this fight. He has a chance, and he’s worthy of a flyer, but he would have to outwork Spence for 12 rounds. The issue I have is that Spence is already a big welterweight that has the build to fight at 160 pounds. He’s going to be at least 15 pounds heavier than Garcia when the bell rings. Spence also has a 3 inch height and 4 inch reach advantage.

Unfortunately for Garcia, Spence is just too bigger for Mikey to overcome. The smart money is on Spence and that’s where we’re going with this bet.

Non-PPV Prelim Fights

The following fights are scheduled for the preliminary portion of Spence vs Garcia and will begin at 8 PM ET on FS1. Currently, these are the only prelim fights listed with boxing betting sites. All boxing odds are courtesy of 5Dimes.

Gregory Corbin (15-0) vs Charles Martin (25-2-1)

  • Gregory Corbin (+330)
  • Charles Martin (-450)

Corbin comes into the bout undefeated and fighting for the 9th time in his home state of Texas. At 38 years old, Corbin is looking to get the biggest win of his career this weekend. His opponent on Saturday, marks a big step up in competition for Corbin. But, it’s now or never for Corbin to make a run up the division and contend for upper echelon fights that could lead to a title opportunity.

Martin started off his career at 23-0 with 20 knockouts and captured the IBF heavyweight title in January 2016. Unfortunately, he lost it in the very next fight to Anthony Joshua via KO. He would bounce back from the Joshua loss to win the next two fights before losing via UD to Kownacki last September. That loss set him back a few steps, but nothing he can’t overcome. At 32 years old, Martin can still make another run up the division as he’s 6 years younger than his opponent.

I do believe that Corbin has betting value as he could get lucky this weekend in front of his hometown fans and pull off the upset. With that said, the safe play here is on Martin based on his past success.

Boxing Bet: Charles Martin (-450)

Rauf Aghayev (26-6) vs Jesse Rodriguez (8-0)

  • Rauf Aghayev (+1000)
  • Jesse Rodriguez (-1750)

Rauf Aghayev is 16 years older than his counterpart and has won 9 straight fights coming into this weekend’s bout. Prior to that winning streak, Rauf had lost 4 straight fights. This will be his American debut as he’s mostly fought over in Azerbaijan and nearby countries. It appears that Rauf has lost to most of the toughest competition in his career.

Jesse Rodriguez is just 19 with 8 professional fights. His last 4 pro fights have been in America and this weekend will be the biggest stage of his young career. Boxing oddsmakers view this fight as an easy win for Rodriguez as he’s a massive betting favorite. In reality, this is a glorified sparring session booked to make Rodriguez look good. There’s no reason to think that Rodriguez won’t win. The only question is whether or not Jesse will do it within the allotted distance.

Mikey Garcia Vs Jessie

James Roach (5-1) vs Lindolfo Delgado (8-0)

  • James Roach (+1400)
  • Lindolfo Delgado (-3050)

Former 2016 Olympian for Mexico, Lindolfo Delgado, will try to remain unbeaten when he takes on James Roach this weekend in a super lightweight fight that’s scheduled to go 8 rounds. Boxing betting sites have Delgado as the biggest betting favorite of the night, which makes Roach the biggest underdog of the night. Delgado has won all 8 fights via KO/TKO including his last bout in January. This will be the third time Delgado has fought in the United States.

Roach started off his career 5-0, but lost in his last fight which was less than two months ago. All 5 of Roach’s wins have come via KO/TKO.

The difference in level of talent is almost as great as the betting odds. This is an easy choice – take Delgado to win via TKO.

Boxing Bet: Lindolfo Delgado (-3050)

Marlon Olea (14-4) vs Fernando Garcia (11-0)

  • Marlon Olea (+640)
  • Fernando Garcia (-1150)

Earl Spencer Jr Vs Mikey Garcia Odds For Today

Fernando Garcia sets out to not only remain unbeaten in his career, but to also give his hometown fans a reason to celebrate. Garcia is a Dallas native and is scheduled to take on the Colombian Marlon Olea in a super featherweight bout.

Garcia last fought two months ago and won via KO. He also fought 3 times in 2018, going 3-0 with 2 TKOs and 1 UD. His opponent hasn’t had as much success. Olea lost his last fight, which was about 6 weeks ago. He’s dropped three of his last four and four of his last 6 contests.

This matchup heavily favors Garcia and there’s no reason why he shouldn’t win. The only question is whether or not he will stop Olea in their 8 round fight. Olea isn’t worth a flyer and there’s no value with Garcia.

Final Thoughts on Spence vs Garcia PPV

The preliminary fights seem pretty cut and dry. The young prospects appear to have favorable matchups, in order to give them an easy win. The PPV card has some intriguing matchups. For starters, the heavyweight contest can go either way despite boxing betting sites listing Arreola as a bigger betting favorite than he should be. The fight should be closer to even odds.

Arroyo versus Nery should be fun to watch. David Benavidez will take on Love in the co-main event and I’m looking forward to seeing how the 22 year old Benavidez bounces back from adversity. Both Nery and Benavidez have been on the wrong side of controversy the last year and they both need a solid win to get back on track and into the title hunt within their respective divisions.

Earl Spencer Jr Record

Lastly, I’m really looking forward to the main event. I love what Mikey Garcia is doing by trying to make history. Spence is a talented fighter and these two should put on a great fight. I just hope we don’t get a repeat of JMM vs Mayweather when Marquez was just too small to compete. Garcia is clearly smaller, but he’s such a talented boxer. This boxing PPV has plenty of entertainment value, but is light on betting value.
