Quartz Game Review

“Break Time you Mining Jerks”

Have you ever wondered what it was like to be a miner on the hunt for precious jewels? In Quartz, you play as one of 5 Dwarven miners on the hunt to pull in the most loot possible all the while you try and sabotage your fellow miners before the end of the work week.

How to Play

In Quartz, you begin the game by determining who goes first by whoever has the most epic beard. After you determine your starting player, you will move in a clockwise movement. Then you give each player their starting hand of 5 cards which can range from actions you can take during your turn (blue cards) and counter cards (purple cards) that are meant to stop your opponent from playing a card on you.

  1. Quartz Iced Gray With a great smoky grey history highlighted by pewter specks, this unfussy Q Quartz calls to mind a single appearance that’s based.
  2. Once reserved for high-end homes, quartz countertops are finding their way into more and more kitchens and bathrooms as brand offerings expand and the material becomes more accessible and affordable. A favorite premium countertop material by kitchen and bathroom designers, quartz is often confused with natural stone and solid surface countertop materials.
  3. Herkimer Mines 'Diamond' Quartz 15.17ctw Faceted Pendant and Earrings Add a little brilliance to an everyday look with the petite, fancy-cut Herkimer 'diamond' quartz featured in this set. Triangular cuts of this unique American-mined stone are sized just right for the perfect accent anytime.

When it is your turn, you can choose one of 2 options:

  1. Go Mining: you reach into the bag to remove one stone from the bag, Be careful when you get Obsidian (we will explain later)
  2. Play An Action: this allows you to play one of the blue cards in your hand. These can range from extending your mining ability to removing Obsidian from your mining cart (be careful because your opponent can play a purple card on you).

However, if you pull 2 Obsidian out of the bag, you will have a “mining accident” and will be ejected from the mine. If you do have an accident, you will receive a Mining For Oafs token which can be used at a later date to remove an Obsidian from your mining cart. If you have mined, lets say Amber, you can move that to your treasure chest to sell on another day (however, do not add any gems to your chest on the final day, that’s just dumb).

Once you have ether mined as much as you want or don’t want to incur another Obsidian (if you already have one), you may chose to leave the Mine. Once a player leaves the Mine, that’s it for you, however all the other players continue and as each player leaves, they can take a Bravery Bonus as they leave. The last player in the mine gets one last run through before being taken out (you can still incur the Obsidian penalty).

After each day, you count your treasure. Each Gem has a value attached to it:

  • Quartz – $1
  • Amethyst – $2
  • Emerald – $3
  • Sapphire – $4
  • Ruby – $6
  • Amber – $8

Also on your Mining Cart, you have bonuses you can receive. Now you continue throughout the days, until the final day. Once you have completed the final day, it is time to tally your earnings. This is the time to take any gems you added to your chest from round 1 to 4 out. You count the amount of gems you have earned (and make sure you remember the bonuses on your board) and then you count the same amount on each card you have remaining in your hand. After every player has received their final totals, the winning player is whoever has earned the most money.

Final Thoughts

Quartz is a great party game for those looking for a game that gives you nothing more than sabotaging your opponent with cards and the anxiety of what gem you may find in the bag. But regardless of the way your game may turn out, Quartz is a game you can comfortably add to your next game-day. I give Quartz, an 8.5 out of 10.

When shopping for quartz countertops, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the different choices and names of quartz. There are many different brands of quartz countertops on the market. Caesarstone, Cambria, Pental, Okite, Silestone, Vicastone, Zodiac, MSI, LG, and many, many more. Unlike granite countertops, quartz countertop slabs have a brand name rather than just a color name. So what is the difference between quartz countertop brands?

What are the differences between quartz countertop brands?

  • Color palette
  • Styles
  • Slab Quality
  • Manufacturer Warranty
  • Availability

Does the brand of countertop you are choosing even matter? Read on to find out.

Color Palette

The first and most obvious difference between quartz brands is the range of color offerings. Some brands can have a limited selection of only a couple dozen colors, while other brands can have well over a hundred different colors to choose for your new countertops.

The “One Thing”

Each major brand of quartz countertops typically has their “one thing”, or specialty look that separates them from their competitors. Most brands have 60 to 70 percent of their color palette roughly the same as the other major players on the market, but use the remaining 30 or 40 percent of their color options for more unique countertop designs that in essence become their trademark.

  • Cambria for example, which is the world’s largest producer of quartz countertops, is known for its bold, dynamic designs with large, sparkly aggregates.
  • Caesarstone on the other hand has a large amount of clean, modern and monochromatic designs like pure white and rugged concrete.
  • Pental is the best at imitating marble and has color choices ranging from bright white to warm gray.
  • Okite offers several quartz countertops that are translucent and can be backlit with LED lighting
  • Silestone offers three different textures of countertops: Polished, Suede and Volcano.

Countertop Warranty

Another major factor that differs between quartz countertop brands is the warranty. A handful of quartz manufacturers such as Cambria and Caesarstone offer a limited lifetime warranty. Most major manufacturers offer a 15 or 20 year warranty.

What does a Quartz Countertop Warranty Cover?

Yahoo Game Review

A warranty from most quartz countertop brands will only cover manufacturer defects. What is a manufacturer defect in terms of quartz countertops? Here are some examples:

  • Abnormal color spots. Defining “abnormal” in a random color pattern can be extremely subjective, but any color variation that is clearly not part of the intended color pattern and occurred during the manufacturing process should be covered by any reputable quartz manufacturer warranty.
  • Foreign objects in the slab. Quartz countertops are made by a unique manufacturing process similar in some ways to pouring concrete and can therefore be susceptible to items being dropped into the slab during manufacturing.
  • Uneven surface. With the exception of intentional texturing, your new quartz countertops should be flat and free of divots, gouges, voids or other variations in the surface.
  • Universal surface polish. The shine or sheen of your countertops is developed during the polishing process that occurs at the factory. The shine should be even throughout the top of the slab. It is important to note that the shine on the edge and other cut areas is completed by your countertop fabricator, not the quartz manufacturer and would not be covered under the warranty.

If you choose a reputable brand of quartz countertops, you will likely not experience any of the above defects or any other defects that I did not list. The overwhelming majority of manufacturer defects would be caught by the manufacturer during their internal quality control checks. In the event a slab does escape the factory with a defect, a quality fabricator, such as New Leaf Cabinets & Counters, who inspects every slab upon arrival and again before installation, would also mostly likely catch the defect prior to the countertops beings installed.

What’s Not Covered Under a Quartz Countertop Manufacturer’s Warranty?

Well, everything except a manufacturer defect.

A manufacturer warranty will not cover:

  • scratches
  • chips
  • heat burns
  • fading from sunlight
  • any type user induced damage whatsoever.
  • fabricator error
  • sink separation
  • seam breakage.

It is extremely important when purchasing new countertops to speak with your countertop fabricator about what their warranty covers in addition to the manufacturer warranty. A quality fabricator will warranty their workmanship for at least one year. Things to look for in a fabrication warranty are sink separation and seam breakage as these are the two most common instances that will occur within a few months of getting your new countertops.

Risks of Countertops Without a Brand Name

No name brands are becoming more and more common and are typically sold at cut throat prices. What does that mean for you? No name, no warranty. It also means that the manufacturing process probably does not have as many quality control procedures in place.

Review

The chances of having an issue with a slab from a no name countertop manufacturer is much higher than in would be from a manufacturer with a warranty. Because the no name brand is not obligated to replace the slab, their quality control standards are typically much lower.

Most no name brands are imported from countries with little or no environmental concern which is not only irresponsible, but also dangerous. Your countertops will be in contact with food that you eat. The safe chemical make-up of those countertops is extremely important.

Countertop Availability

Another big factor when considering which brand of quartz is right for you is slab availability. If you are making selections early enough in the remodel or building process, waiting a couple weeks for your slabs might not be an issue, but if you need your new countertops next week, it doesn't do you any good to look at colors that are not available for several weeks because they are stocked out of state. For quick turn around check out the New Leaf Square Foot Collection that contains only in stock colors that are sold by the square foot and can save you thousands of dollars.

Does the Brand of Quartz Countertop Matter?

Yes. It really doesn’t matter which major brand name that you choose, but it is extremely important that you buy quartz countertops produced only by a major manufacturer that stands behind their product with a lengthy warranty. Your new countertops will be part of your home for years to come. Saving a few bucks to go with a no name, no warranty and unknown manufacturer can present your family with risks that simply aren’t worth it.

At New Leaf Cabinets & Counters, we only sell quartz manufactured by major brands known for consistent quality. We are not going to subject our customers to the risks of mystery manufactures.

In addition, we provide a 1 year fabrication and workmanship warranty that covers seam bonding, sink separation and any other workmanship issues.

Higan, Quartz is not a good fit for outdoors as it is not warrantied for full UV exposure. A better fit for outdoor use would be Dekton or Granite.
